Art in Recovery

I am a survivor of abuse and parental alcoholism. Recovery and my artistic journey coincide and interdependent. When I am thinking of art in these terms, I include all forms, Writing, Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, etc.

  • Marketing

I’m terrible at self promotion. There is some latent child-based taboo hardwired in my brain that says I am vain if I promote myself. But my books are not getting any traction, and my marketing skills are falling way short. So, I hired a marketing person to help me write better adds and say nice… Continue reading

  • Author Author

Today, I was at an author event at my local library, about 36 of us. It was good to be with other writers, where I learned many people are going through same thing that I am: the struggles of marketing, etc. I had to force myself to participate, because I am chronically shy. Each time… Continue reading

  • Write To Market

I’ve been reading a book about marketing my books. One of the early themes: find out what is selling and write to that market. The author asks, “do you want to pursue your art or sell books?” It’s possible artistic and commercial interests overlap, but when they don’t, I must decide what is more important… Continue reading

  • Winding Road

When I chose the title I first thought of the Beatles song, but that’s another story. When I write for my blog, I tell myself, I have to be optimistic and forward looking, writing inspiring entries that are uplifting, as though the road through life is always on the up. The truth is, I have… Continue reading

  • The Bunker

A popular them for me is having the perfect writing space, where I have total control of the room. I often think about J.D. Salinger’s bunker, where he would isolate himself while he worked. I’ve often fantasized about building a shed in back, and making it a habitable work space, with windows, heat and AC,… Continue reading

  • What is Art?

My sister told me that the art world has changed, that the focus is no longer on aesthetics (pretty). I listen to her because she is a trained artist with a college degree and taught art for many years. I’ve never been trained, but I’ve done thousands of pieces over 50+ years (there I go… Continue reading

  • Imposter

Now I’ve done it: I signed up for an author event at my local library for early April. About 30 local authors will be there. My wife showed me the flyer as something we could check out as patrons, but then I had to go ahead and sign up as a author. Now, I’m dreading… Continue reading

  • A Tale of Two Cities

I’ve always been a fan of the Dickens classic, the dichotomy of two cities in such different circumstances. I like it so much that I make references to it in my futuristic sci-fi trilogy, Escape From Desolation. I believe in parallels in art, where great works echo in new works by different creators. Some call… Continue reading

  • Wrist Watch

I’m not much of a jewelry guy and don’t usually wear even wrist watches, but I have one that I finally got a battery for so I could wear it again. My uncle gave it to me as thanks for my help in settling my aunt’s affairs. The process wasn’t too difficult, but I was… Continue reading

  • World Building

Before I go thru my rough draft of my latest book, I take some time making sure I understand the environment my story lives in. I have set my story 300 years in the future, so the question is what will Earth be like then. In previous books, my story took place on an alien… Continue reading
