I’ve been reading a book about marketing my books. One of the early themes: find out what is selling and write to that market. The author asks, “do you want to pursue your art or sell books?” It’s possible artistic and commercial interests overlap, but when they don’t, I must decide what is more important for me. When I wrote my books, I was completing a story that’s been in my head for years. I published the books at the encouragement of my wife. But I have struggled deciding what the market is these books. The story is esoteric. The meaning is layered for the reader to discover on their own. There’s more to the story than the top layer of a guy trying to escape an alien world. That doesn’t become clear until the end of the second book. I read a lot of weird stuff, and have seen a lot of weird shows. Esoteric and weird is out there. So, I don’t have any answers yet. I have a marketing guy helping me. I know one thing for sure, my book is not “Steampunk” or “Romantasy.”
