My wife and I want to update our deck. The wood is worn out and rotting in some places. Quotes came in way above our budget, so I decided to do a simple replacement of the floor and railing system. The cost was much lower and not factoring in my labor. I needed 16 foot boards of pressure treated wood, making each one really heavy, maybe fifty pounds. That’s when my age starting showing. I struggled to move the wood to the backyard. I had my daughter help me, but she had to leave for work. She was a big help, but 3/4’s of the wood still needed to be moved. She was wise enough to call my son and ask him to help, which he did. He’s a big and strong guy. He moved the boards with ease. The experience is a stark reminder of the consequences of aging. I still have the replacement work ahead of me. It while take a while, because I already know I won’t be able to work very long before needing a break. My kids might help me, but I’m stubborn. I used to be able to do this stuff on my own and I am determined to retain something of my youthful days.
