The Fourth of July usually is a day for BBQs and big gatherings. This year people in my family went all directions. My wife, daughter and I went to a mostly empty theater and watched a movie. We had no big BBQ. No one came over. Our only fireworks were a few sparkles in the sky as we drove home. I’m generally nostalgic, so I was somewhat sad about the absence of our traditional gathering. If I could have anyone over for a dinner, I would invite the people that have passed to join my family and my sisters’ families for one last big Fourth BBQ: my grandparents, aunts and uncles, and parents. There would be ruckus and commotion. My family was known for getting into big fights. My Uncle would work the grill. My Grandmother would lay down the law. My Mom would make her famous potato salad. My Aunt would interrogate me about my career. It would be a grand event with too many people to talk to. I miss those days.
