This is the day when another solar eclipse goes across part of North America. I don’t have my glasses from the last time, but I made a viewing box, so I can marvel at the image without damaging my eyes. The box brings me back to my youth. When a partial eclipse was passing, my father told me how to make the viewing contraption, a simple box with a pin hole on one end and a piece of white paper on the inside of the opposite end. I marveled at the way it got dim in the middle of the day, and how the image of the eclipsed sun showed up perfectly in my box. I started at it for a long time. It’s one of my fondest memories, the joy of discovery, and the joy of my father’s guidance. My wife thought I was crazy making my current viewing box for today’s event, but she already knew I was eccentric. Happy viewing!
