Nice to be a Squirrel

Sometimes when I get depressed or agitated by the news or politics, I think about the wild animals that live around my suburban home: Coyotes, Racoons, Rabbits, Hawks, Woodpeckers, Sparrows, other birds, Possums, Skunks, Moles and Mice. It’s a whole gaggle of creatures that meander about the yards without any concern or awareness of the problems of their human neighbors. And especially the Squirrel, who makes nests in the trees, steals birdseed from the feeders and walks across our deck without fear. I know in some parts of the country, people hunt squirrels for meat, but in my neighborhood they roam freely, worried more about the hawks than people. Squirrels don’t care if the house they live by, is a Democrat, Republican or Independent house. They might care if the residents are dog owners. Our little Lhasa apso loves to chase the squirrels. It must give them a start. Too bad they don’t know our dog has no chance of catching them, or would know what to do if she did. Of course, I don’t want to be a squirrel–I don’t like living in trees, but it would nice to be free of human worries.
