My cat pepper is good at getting what she wants. She has learned what annoys us. So when she’s hungry and we’re not paying attention, she scrapes her paw on things to make noise. She starts up, then stops to listen if it’s working. If we don’t respond, she starts up again scratching at things until we react. Paper is her favorite because it’s noisy. Sometimes when she’s on the table scratching away, she jumps off when she sees me leaning forward as though I’m getting out of my chair. If I fake getting up, I can get her to stop, but she comes back in two minutes to start up again. The worse time is when she’s hungry at 3 in the morning. She has learned that scraping the wall makes the most annoying sound of all, enough to wake us from our slumber. She is an annoying–but clever–cat.
