Globe Theater

When I was in high school, one of my English teacher’s wanted everyone to do a project inspired by literature. Two of my friends and I were sitting around and decided it would be cool to make a model of Shakespeare’s Globe Theater. I had the best basement for the project and I had the tools. The easy part was over. It was before the internet or computers. I went to the library to find crude drawings of the theater, and from that we set out to build a replica. The model was going to be about three feet wide and almost as high. We worked for months, after school, evenings, and weekends. I would get frustrated with my friends because I didn’t think they were working on it hard enough. I found out why hosting the construction site was a disadvantage. When it was due at the end of the school year, we were only 90% done. We turned it in anyway, impressed the teacher and got him to agree that I would finish it in the summer. Decades later the model is still used by the English department. A few years ago, I brought it home one summer and restored it. It gives me satisfaction that my friends and I built something that is used and admired.
