I don’t eat much candy anymore, but I still enjoy M&Ms, partly because it’s chocolate and partly because I have good memories associated with them. When I was a kid, my uncle would keep a big jar of M&Ms on the china cabinet, which he loved to share after dinner. He would hand them out like he was handing out a big treasure. With our stash in hand, we would settle down in the living room with the family to watch television. The TV set lay low to the ground so he could lay down cushions on the floor and comfortably watch the programs in the prone position. He said it was easier on his back. My sisters and I would gather around him and watch. He liked to surprise us–that is scare us–with an outburst or a poke in the side. It became a game, because we knew it was coming but never when. So when I enjoy M&Ms now, I often think of my uncle, a man who brought me much joy.
