I heard once that the rate of depression in the American Midwest is high during the winters, due to long periods of sunless skies and generally bleak weather. I live in the middle of the Midwest. Each year after I make my New Year’s resolutions I struggle to make them. January is tough. If I don’t get started in the morning, I struggle to get anything done. Then I beat myself for failing to accomplish my resolutions. I’ve begun to notice this happens every year. My daughter suggested we make our new year resolutions in the Spring, when we are feeling more upbeat, when the sun is out and the plants are turning green or blooming. I like this idea. I may work on my writing and other projects in the winter, but I will be easy on myself if I don’t get much done: after all–winter is the hibernating season. Time for a nap.
