I’ve had an idea for a long time, that I would write better, or more consistently, if I had the right space. I’ve been drawn to the idea of J.D. Salinger’s bunker, a second home on his property where he would hold up by himself to write. I’ve tinkered with the idea of buying a prefab shed and modifying it to be my “cabin in the woods.” All I need to do is run an extension cord out for power. I could my phone as a hot spot for internet. I would set the cabin off a bit from my house and make a space completely under my control and away from distractions of day to day living. So far it’s a fantasy, but it has an appeal because I am easily distracted. Sitting down and writing is hard. The creative space is a delicate thing and easily disturbed. There is a resistance to entering that place and mentally staying there. It requires tons of energy. Right now, I share my office with a cat and a piano. It suffices but I still dream of my cabin in the woods.
