My wife and I had to go out of town recently. Generally, we prefer to drive, but it was too far, so we took a commercial flight. Most of the time we go, the planes are packed and the seats are tiny. I suppose this is why business and first class are appealing. On our way home the plane was delayed because of mechanical problems. We got the news after everyone had boarded and we thought we were about to taxi out. The plane was 100% full and I was getting claustrophobic because it felt so crowded. When the pilot announced the news, some of the passengers were angry. I first imagined a big confrontation coming, like I see on the news, but fortunately nothing happened. The airline de-loaded the plane which was good because waiting in a hot and crowded plane for hours would have been a nightmare, another thing I remember seeing on the news. When we reloaded the plane, it was only half-full because fellow travelers took other flights. It became a very comfortable flight. I’ve learned over the years not to sweat unexpected changes in plans, because sometimes the new course works out better.
