Daily writing prompt
What major historical events do you remember?

When I think about history, I imagine things that happened long ago, before I existed. But history is not all too far in the past. My parents were kids during World War Two. My uncle fought in the war, in the jungles of New Guinea. My grandparents grew up in the depression. Lots of history, but of course, history keeps going. I remember John Kennedy’s assassination. It was my sister’s birthday. I have a film of her birthday party. There is a television in the background and Johnson’s face on the screen … addressing the nation. I not only have a record of a historical moment, but of my family’s daily life around that moment. It reminds me that while we have a record of key historical events, there are countless people living their lives anonymously. Another historical event I remember is the first moon walk. I took pictures of the television broadcast and used the photos to tell my friends I was on the moon too. I was a weird kid. When my kids would learn about history and I would tell them I remember being there, they thought I was ancient. They’re adults now, and someday they may tell their kids the historical events they remember from “ancient” times.
