When I graduated from college and secured my first job, it was a big deal. Then, because the commute from my parents’ house was bad, I rented an apartment close to work. For awhile, I only had a bed and dresser (from childhood) in an otherwise empty pad. But filling it with my own furniture was fun. But what really made me feel grown up was the purchase of my own tool box with a basic set of tools. No longer depending on my father’s tools really put me over the adult threshold. It’s crazy, I guess. The hammer I bought for that tool box is still my favorite. My father has passed and I have his tools, and his toolbox, but mine remains a symbol of my passage into adulthood.
