If I knew for sure that approaching regular publishers would lead to a publishing contract, I would probably go ahead. The fear of rejection is not exclusive to me, but I’ve stayed away from publishers because of it. I have this idea they would not only reject my work, but be cruel and expose me as a fraud. It’s harsh thinking, but I grew up without any support for my creativity. I got the message that unless I can make a lot of money, don’t bother. In the case of writing, unless I am an instant bestseller, don’t bother. The irony is that the harshness is my own. The real world may be different. When I searched for a literary agent, I didn’t find one, but every single one was cordial and kind. To keep moving forward, I decided to switch gears and since I could afford it, I self-published. Having my book in hand is a boost. I’m not making a lot of sales but I have something tangible that I’ve completed, which makes a great legacy for my kids. They think I’m a success and that feels good. Someday those publishers may here from me.
