Just Fine Before 1990

Daily writing prompt
Your life without a computer: what does it look like?

The computer age is not that old. In the science fiction world it may have been around longer, but what is common now, has not been that long. I went through all of my formal education without a personal computer. I remember my college friends going to the computer lab at three in the morning to run their programs because it was the only hour they could get computer time; and what they ran was a huge stack of cards that was fed into a reader. All through school I remember many late nights typing away at my typewriter, hoping my ribbon would hold out and that I had enough white out in hand for my many errors. My kids will never know the trauma of white out getting to thick to use.

Moving information around was different before computers. During my early work life, I remember when a colleague bought an airline seat for a bundle of documents so she get it over night to its destination. Computers changed everything. I still have a huge collection of stories on my shelf that I handwrote before there were computers. Computers have generally changes things, but before they existed, I got along just fine. And, my elders told me they got along just fine before television. I suppose I will tell my grandkids someday, that I got along just without AI.

  1. One day our internet went out and my kids panicked. I was a kid in the 80’s so instead of panicking I had a nice quiet day to myself without all those outside distractions. LOL
