I like to think of myself as growing up in the golden age of television. Although it technically ended around 1960 and I didn’t begin to watch it until the late 1960s, I retain an idea that the television that I watched as a kid was better than what is on now. I remember the television of ideas, story and character, people trying to get by. I loved Star Trek, but it terrified me when I first saw it. Twilight Zone often inspired me and made me think. Outer Limits scared me too, while it inspired me. Many of the episodes from those shows echoes in my mind today, as perfect illustrations of human angst, the need to be relevant and have purpose. I will never forget James Whitmore allowing himself to be left on a desolate planet only to realize too late it’s better to be with people. (Twilight Zone, 1963, “On Thursday We Leave for Home”). It wasn’t all esoteric. I loved a good episode of Gilligan’s Island.
