I have always been an idealist. When I was a kid, my father (who was extremely well read) often got mad at me because my interest in our discussions centered around ideas and all their nuance, where he wanted to get to a definitive point. He wanted answers and I wanted questions. The search for meaning is the grand quest. The idea that there is a divine presence that assigns meaning is popular; it relates to the idea of destiny. Personal meaning, the reason I am here, has always been a dominant factor that motivates my decisions. One of the reasons for my focus, aside from it being a common human trait, is that my father was a lost man. He didn’t know who he was and could not find anything that motivated him to any kind of action. My experience with him drove me to figure myself out, to have a sense of meaning and purpose. I could say that my father, by his tragic example motivated me, wow, a new insight. Thanks, Dad.
