Art Or Publish

Daily writing prompt
If you were going to open up a shop, what would you sell?

I’ve been a mostly unconventional person. Against my parents’ wishes, I’m a self taught artist. When I published a book, I published myself. Many people follow these paths, but the shadow of stigma looms, by not being main stream. When I searched for a way to offer my art for sale online, I searched for an organization focusing on artists, and promoting artists for the art’s sake. I chose Etsy for that reason, but as it becomes popular, it becomes more commercial and less focused on being an artistic entity. The President of Etsy makes over a million dollars a year … Wow! I guarantee that most artists, who are the life blood of Etsy, don’t make anything. With this in mine, I dream of having an Art shop, focused on promoting local artists. I belonged to an Art League that did this and it was great. If I had not moved away from there, I would still be there. Also, I fantasize about starting a publishing company that publishes books to benefit the writer. In the words of Brenda Ueland, “everyone can write – everyone has something to say.” Of course, these ventures take resources. I hope I get there some day. And of course, every venture must bring in income to counter the expenses, meaning it’s tempting to become a business. Keeping an altruistic venture pure is always a challenge, but the goal is worth it.
