I used to listen to music when I worked, but I’ve gotten out of the habit. Music always influenced my painting. But when I write new material I need quiet. Music or television is a distraction. I listen to it rather than the voice in my head. When I write, it is not pure quiet, but the sounds are comforting, the signs of the house routine. These sounds help me get into creative space: the blower of the vents under my desk, the passing of a car (not speeding), our cats meowing for a snack, our dog yipping to get attention (sometimes she has to sit by me while I write), a plane passing overhead, the distance echo of the highway, and a passing neighbor having a conversation with a voice from their ear piece. I think pure quiet would be too distracting.
