I developed a habit of writing something new each day, even if I write only a few lines. Much of that daily writing appears on my blog. I’ve been doing this four years. I have built up a library of essays, poems and stories that I can develop into something more. More importantly, I make a statement each time I write that I matter, that what I think matters and that honoring my interests matters. It’s an act of will that reinforces my self-esteem. When I was young, I was not encouraged to express myself or be creative. In fact, I was discouraged to do it. I felt inferior as a result. Sometimes my writing feels like an act of defiance against old messages, like “I’ll show you!” Sometimes it’s just an unconscious habit. When my daily writing is completely automatic, something completely natural, and not a deliberate act of will, then I be free. I will keep writing.
