Pay Attention

Daily writing prompt
How do you practice self-care?

I have a tendency to get myself worked up, often over little things. Once I get started, I keep going until I blow up. It’s bad for people around me and bad for my health. My wife is afraid I will stroke out. I’ve learned to take some deep breaths and that seems to come me down. I’ve done it enough that it has become habit. When I get upset, I take a breath right away. It works, most of the time, which is a big improvement. I also pay attention to my natural interests and passions. For many years, I rejected my creative nature. In my family I was supposed to be an engineer, scientist or something else professional, that made money. Even though my mother was a drama major, my grandfather did oil painting and one of my uncles dreamed of writing novels, my family discouraged my artistic leanings. Paying attention to my creative nature, every day, is a major step in self care. In my life I made thousands of sculptures, painted hundreds of paintings, and written three novels, plus a ton of other stuff. I guess I’m doing all right.
