Ideas

I grew up in the Golden Age of television. Every generation says they grew up in the good old days, but I remember early television programming packed with ideas and serious introspection. Maybe my memory is selective. I am a big fan of Rod Serling’s writing. I still choke up when I think about “In Praise of Pip,” about a small time crook who makes a psychic connection with his dying son in Vietnam. There’s so many ideas to unpack, a father’s love, a son’s trust, what’s important, what matters, faith, and self sacrifice. It was my early experiences with television that built my love of ideas, talking about them, the journey to looking at things in new ways, and expanding consciousness. My father lost patience with me. He always wanted to get to the answer, get to the point. But I saw no fun in that. Many things have no clear answers, no final meaning. The journey is the joy.
