My kids roll their eyes when I am about to explain something, a legal issue, social issues in the country, an event in history or my opinion on a host of topics. “Here goes Dad again…” They brace for one of my lectures. I like to talk about ideas and communicate. I missed my calling to be a teacher or professor. But I do think it’s true most people do not know how to explain their ideas or information. When my father was ill he had five doctors, an internist, a cardiologist, a pulmonologist, a urologist and an oncologist. The names themselves bear explaining, but I’ll spare you. We were seeking advice on whether to get surgery for his cancer. We could not get a clear or definitive answer from any of the doctors, because none of them talked with the others. I spoke with them individually, I gained a good picture, which I put into one story. When I presented it to his urologist, I finally got him to say, that the surgery would kill my father, so we went on to other options. Even learned people like doctors struggle with explaining.
