Breaking Tradition

What is your middle name? Does it carry any special meaning/significance?

My middle name is my mother’s maiden name. It was a tradition in my family to give the first born son his mother’s maiden name, or that is what I was told. It turns out that my father was the first one, and I was the second. My grandmother wanted to preserve her maiden name, and my grandfather would not have a say in the matter. To give my father’s middle name more weight, she talked my mother and father into repeating the convention, hoping to start a tradition. My wife and I were the rabble and decided not to continue, choosing a middle name that had more meaning, the name of her twin brother. I hear heaven thunder from my grandmother’s disappointment, but I can live with it.
